8th December: Guide Tour of Genoa Historic Center
9:00 a.m. : Meet your guide at Jolly Hotel Marina and begin your walking tour of Genoa historic centre (the largest historic city centre in Europe) strolling through the typical "carruggi" and admiring its beautiful buildings reminiscent the glorious past of Genoa "the superb". The itinerary begins in Piazza Caricamento where Palazzo San Giorgio (once headquarters of the bank of the Republic of Genoa) is located, then it takes you to Piazza Banchi, where where the money-changers used to set up their stalls. Via degli Orefici leads you to via San Lorenzo and the impressive San Lorenzo Cathedral. Nearby is Piazza Matteotti , with Palazzo Ducale, ancient seat of the Republic of Genoa, and the baroque Chiesa del Gesu' which houses paintings by Rubens and Guido Reni. Just in front of the church is Piazza De Ferrari, now the very heart of Genoa, with Carlo Felice Opera House, Palazzo dell’Accademia Linguistica and fine 17th- and 18th-century buildings. The tour ends at about 1.00 p.m. in via Garibaldi, symbol of the prosperous city of the 16th century, with the visit of some "Palazzi dei Rolli", listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites.
For people who have booked the full day tour, lunch in a typical restaurant. After lunch, bus tour of the city to discover the old town’s surroundings: the "circonvallazione", a ring-road that skirts the city following the amphitheatre of hills that surround it. It is a tourist itinerary of villas, parks and panoramic corners which offers a view of the city quite different to that seen from the sea. Travelling along the Corso Italia promenade, you will reach Boccadasse, a fishermen’s suburb with typical Genoeses houses. The tour ends with the bus transfer back to your hotels.
