MX: the IEEE International Standard for Interactive Music
Motivation and Objectives

The standard is meant to show that music enjoyment can consist not only of passive listening of binary audio files, but may be instead a navigational adventure in music in a full multimedia environment, well beyond that of current DVD’s. This includes exploration of sounds, images, video, scores, texts and hypertexts, with the possibility of learning thanks to historical and musicological data. This allows full exploitation of the potential of current hardware, in a novel way, from personal computers to portable players with displays, passing through systems for home theatre and future audio-video systems.

Session Outline

The session will feature a new IEEE standard under completion to represent musical information thanks to interactive and synchronized layers. The first proposed contribution, The Concept of Interactive Music, gives an overall view of the structural and formal characteristics of the standard. The following ones explore the possibilities of the application of the standard in regard to the several levels typical of music fruition: musical forms, scores, sound aspects and audio. Particular emphasis will be given on how this new standard allows synchronous interaction among all musical representations: audio, printed material, movies, images, and the like.

Specific Topics of Interest

Standards that bridge the multimedia and knowledge domains area. Keywords: music standard, music, XML, multilayer, multimedia, man-machine interaction.
